Peaceful Heart Alpacas is home to three generations of the Willis family: Sharla Willis, her son David, and her parents Mike and Linda. We live here with 50 alpacas ranging in age from just a few months to 19 years of age. They fill our pastures and our hearts with joy. Alpacas are a gentle and curious animal with a high degree of intelligence. We love to interact with them and get to know them each as individuals. Once a year we shear them, and are blessed with a harvest of pounds of ultrafine alpaca fiber which we use to create our alpaca yarns and items hand crafted at our farm. (The alpaca fiber used in our alpaca socks and alpaca sweaters come from Peru, where these items are made.)
We began our farming adventure with alpacas in 2005. Sharla had started spinning and was enjoying working with fiber of all types, but particularly fell in love with the feel of alpaca fiber and creating soft, baby alpaca yarn. At the same time, Linda had been seeing alpacas on TV and fell in love with their sweet faces. As a family, we began learning more about alpacas, visiting fiber shows and alpaca farms and spending time talking with alpaca farmers. We all decided that raising alpacas would provide us with the type of lifestyle we were looking for: an opportunity to work together as a family, to spend time outside with sweet, gentle animals, and to create lovely products with their luxurious fiber. We soon bought our first alpacas and started looking for a farm where we could raise them. We moved to our 27 acres on the Blue Ridge Parkway in February 2006 and began building fences and sheds so our alpacas could move home. By the end of 2006, we had all our alpacas on the farm and our first two crias (alpaca babies) running around the pastures. Since that time, we've had over 30 alpaca crias born on the farm, including our Reserve Color Champion Peaceful Heart's Lord Tennyson. We love our alpacas and love to share them with others. Feel free to come by anytime to meet them and talk with us about the joys and challenges of raising alpacas.
